Harvesting Contractor Insurance — Managing Risk During the Season
Harvesting is one of the highest-risk periods in agriculture
For harvesting contractors, the risk profile during the season is compressed and intense — high-value machinery operating continuously in dry and dusty conditions, on properties you have not worked before, with time pressure that can lead to decisions being made faster than they should be. The financial consequences of a machinery loss or liability claim during harvest can be severe for a business that depends on a short seasonal window. This page provides general information only and is not personal advice.
What harvesting contractor insurance typically covers
A properly structured package typically brings together: mobile plant and machinery (headers, chaser bins, grain carts, field bins and ancillary equipment), heavy motor (trucks and trailers used to transport grain and move equipment), public and products liability (covering your legal liability for damage to third-party property or injury to third parties), and in some cases personal accident cover for owner-operators without access to workers compensation.
Broadform liability — including coverage for damage to crops or property on the farms you work — is particularly important. The value of a standing crop or grain in a silo can be substantial, and your exposure if machinery causes a fire or damages stored grain is real.
Fire risk
Fire is one of the most significant risks during grain harvest. Machinery operating in dry conditions generates heat, and harvest residue can accumulate to create ignition risk. A harvester fire in a standing crop creates both an asset loss and a liability exposure. Most machinery policies cover fire as a standard peril — but the liability arising from a fire that spreads sits in the liability section, and the limit matters. A $5 million public liability limit may be inadequate if a fire destroys a large area of crop across multiple properties.
Seasonal workers and subcontractors
Harvesting operations often involve additional operators during peak season — family members, casual workers or subcontractors. Your insurance arrangements need to reflect this. Workers compensation obligations for seasonal employees also need to be in order before the season starts, not after a workplace incident.
