Professional Indemnity Insurance for Agronomists — What You Need to Understand
Why agronomists need professional indemnity insurance
An agronomist’s advice directly influences decisions with significant financial consequences — what crop to plant, what chemical to apply, what inputs to invest in and at what rate. When that advice is alleged to have been wrong, incomplete or negligently given, the claim that follows is a professional indemnity (PI) claim. PI insurance covers your legal defence costs and any damages awarded arising from a claim that your professional services caused a financial loss to a client. This page provides general information only and is not personal advice.
The claims-made basis — the most important thing to understand
PI insurance is written on a claims-made basis, not an occurrence basis. The policy that responds to a claim is the policy in force when the claim is made — not the policy in force when the advice was given. If your PI insurance lapses, you lose protection for all past advice, even advice given when you were insured. This makes continuous cover essential, and the run-off period after you retire or close your practice an important consideration.
What PI insurance for agronomists typically covers
A PI policy for agronomic advice typically covers claims arising from alleged negligence, errors or omissions in professional services: incorrect variety or chemical recommendations, advice on application rates that caused crop damage or residue issues, soil and water management advice, irrigation recommendations, and general agronomy consulting. Defence costs are covered from when a claim is first notified — you do not need to wait for resolution.
What PI insurance does not cover
PI does not cover intentional dishonest or fraudulent acts, bodily injury or property damage in the conventional sense (those sit in public liability), or contract disputes about payment or contractual performance. The scope of services described in your policy matters — services outside that description may not be covered.
Choosing the right limit
The right limit depends on the scale of your work and the value of decisions your advice influences. An agronomist advising a small mixed farm has a different exposure from one advising large-scale broadacre operations across a wide geographic area. Discuss your specific practice with us rather than defaulting to a minimum limit.
